Summer Activity Series

The Summer Activity Series features hands-on, topic related activities throughout the museum for all ages.

June

June 1st & 2nd Frogs
Learn about the life cycle of a frog, and other fun facts about these small amphibians.

June 8th-13th Treasure Trove
Learn what it takes to turn your favorite treasures into a museum collection. We’ll get you started with the information you need, all you have to do is collect your favorite found items. At the end of the summer, you’ll have a chance to exhibit your prized collection at the museum!

June 15th-20th Rock Art
From petroglyph carving to cave painting and stone landmarks, people throughout the ages have used rock art to pass on useful information. Join us to learn about these ancient types of art and the people who created them. While you’re here, you’ll have a chance to make your own rock art.

June 22nd-27th Living Fossils
Not all ancient plants and animals have gone extinct! Somehow they have managed to survive climate change over the eons and devastating mass extinctions. Learn about the adaptations of these hardy survivors and where they are living today.

July

July 6th-11th Ice Age Alaska Style
Was all of Alaska covered by thick ice sheets? Absolutely . . . . not! Learn what the climate was like and explore the fierce ice age animals that roamed Alaska then and now. Also, you’ll understand what it took for humans to survive their harsh conditions.

July 13th-18th Violent Volcanoes
Welcome to the ring of fire! Alaska has well over 100 volcanoes and has a front row seat to a very active and earth shaking subduction zone. Learn about Alaska’s most notable volcanoes and understand why they aren’t so bad compared to mega-volcanoes like Yellowstone.

July 20th-25th Monsters of the Air
Do you think hungry, vicious, flying creatures only appear in the movies? Think again! Throughout time the skies have contained creatures just as treacherous as the nastiest T-rex. Join the museum to learn about these ancient monsters and their modern counterparts.

July 27th-August 1 Monsters of the Land
We all know T-Rex was a vicious land stomping predator, but were there others just as scary? Yes! Join the museum and find out about T-rex’s ground thumping rivals throughout time.

August

August 3rd-8th Monsters of the Sea
The great white shark is actually a small fish living in a big pond when it comes to vicious sea creatures throughout history. Learn about the giant sea serpents and monsters that have hunted the Earth’s oceans inspired myths, and still scare us today.

Hours: Tuesday - Sunday 10AM-5PM, Drop-in
Cost: $5/child & adult, $2/additional child
Child Care Groups $4 per child, chaperones free for 1 1/2 - 2 hour visit (please call ahead for reservations, lunch area available)
