Guess Log

by: Julie Ball (1998) Soldotna, Alaska

Now the end of the dig had come. Elena felt a little sad to see the fossils being loaded on to the plane to fly back with the field crew. As the last of the gear was being stowed on the twin otter plane, Dr. Parker approached her. "Elena, you have been an excellent member of our team. Thank you for your hard work and dedication to this project."

Elena looked proudly up at Dr. Parker. "Thank you for letting me help. I've learned so much this summer."

"Well, there is still more you can learn from this adventure." Replied Dr. Parker. "I want to keep you up to date with what is going on in the lab. So, I will be writing to you and sending you reports. I was wondering if you could do me a small favor after the lab work is complete? The rest of the team and I have been impressed by your log of the site. After you enter the lab results, could we make copies of your log to keep with our records?"

Elena felt honored. She told Dr. Parker she would be happy to send him a copy of the completed log. She waved to the plane for as long as she could see it, happily hugging her site log to her chest.

Over the next several months, Elena received reports from Dr. Parker. She also continued to write to him keeping in touch and asking questions about the information he sent.
