Elena trudged up the hill after her toddling little brother.  "Levi, come here", she called.  Levi turned, gave a giggling, blueberry grin and sped on.  Elena and her family had climbed the hill that afternoon to do the fall berry picking.  After Levi had eaten every berry Elena had picked, he was full and through with sitting around waiting for the buckets to fill. Elena got the job of watching Levi as he explored the hillside.

He pointed joyfully at a Spruce Grouse just off the trail.  "Bird" he squealed. Levi hurried with excitement tripping and picking himself up.  His little head bobbing just above the bushes as he chased the bird. Elena was surprised that the Grouse did not take off.  It seemed to know just how fast Levi could run and kept neatly out of his reach.

The Grouse led them further up the hill to where the brush was sparse and the ground was covered with shale.  Elena was not worried that Levi would go much further for here the hill became steep and slippery with the broken shale.

"Ohhh, bird, bird!" Levi shouted to the grouse as it settled into a bush half way up the hill. It fluffed its feathers and looked down at them with a supercilious air. Levi sat down in disgust. Elena sat down beside him.

As she looked around, she realized how much erosion had taken place over the year since they had last been berry picking.  This part of the hill had been a solid, smooth piece of rock last year.  Now the main part of that rock was broken into smaller pieces and had slid further down the slope.   Levi kicked with his feet; pieces of shale skittered down the hill.

Before long they were both in a game of seeing who could make the shale go the furthest.  Soon their feet were down to the solid rock.  Levi was clearing a piece of the ground off.  Sweeping all of the smaller pieces of shale to the side to look at what was below.  "Bone", he said to Elena.  "Dog bone for Kita"  "That’s not a dog bone Levi, that’s just some weird rock.", Elena replied.  "Dog bone!" Levi insisted.   Elena cleared away more of the rock.  Sure enough, it looked like there was some sort of gray bone embedded in the rock.  What was showing of the bone was about a foot and a half long.  The joint end was as wide as her hand with her fingers spread.

Now it was Elena who was excited. Her class had been studying paleontology in school. Now, she knew just what she had to do.

What should Elena do?
