USGS geologist Irv Taileur found vertebrate fragments of an unidentified Ichthyosaur in the Brooks Range in 1950. Vertebra, teeth, and jaw fragments of other ichthyosaur were also found in the region. These dolphin-like marine reptiles with four paddlelike limbs and a fishlike tail, that moved side to side, swam the open seas catching and eating fish. They also gave birth to live young.
