May I Collect Fossils and Artifacts?

Collection of State & Federal Land Private Lands
Plant Fossils Yes
  • Sales of plant finds are illegal.
  • Rare plants require permits.
Permission of Landowner
Invertebrate Fossils Yes
  • Sales of invertebrate finds are illegal.
  • Rare invertebrates require permits.
Permission of Landowner
Vertebrate Fossils No
  • Collection and sales are illegal.
  • Permits for scientific research are required
Permission of Landowner
Artifacts No
  • Collection and sales are illegal.
  • Permits for scientific research are required
Permission of Landowner
  • Human remains are protected.

 

 

What can I do?
  • Leave vertebrate fossils and artifacts in place.
  • Record the location on a map and/or write down details of your find.
  • Tell a scientist their location.
  • Don't over-collect a site.
  • Write or call for more information:
